If we wonder why our CM is so rigorous one has to trace the metamorphosis of its growth. Briefly it grew as follows :
Ancient period which concentrated on Dance n Drama - time upto Matanga
Medieval period which concentrated on Gita and Natya -
Modern period which was exclusive to Gita literature.
Helpful were the Hymns, Rig and Sama Veda, Sutras , Grammarians like Panini (dealing with speech and sound) puranas, prayers and devotional hymns
It would be interesting to note that Rig Vedic Hymns were chanted in one Note and to avoid monotony lowering or raising the level another Note was found and chants were done. Thats the time our ancestors obtained 3 Notes. We are talking of 500 BC. And the names of the notes were Udatta, Anudatta and Svarita. These were the RI Ni SA of our modern times.
Gradually 2 notes were added and a scale of 5 notes evolved. GA RI SA NI DA. Notice the scale is a downward slope.
Then the concept of Swara Sapthaka came into being by adding 2 more notes making it a scale of 7 as MA GA RI SA NI DA PA. If this is one article you will read on Lakshanagrandhas it would be nice if you know the names of the swaras as were called then.... which goes Krishta, mandra, Atisvarya, Chaturtha, Tritiya Dviteeya and prathama.
Point i am making is : Since Vedic Times our music has been polished by bright minds and it has undergone great changes. What we have today is the work of 2500 years of continued engaging by bright minds and vocal chords
Note : Happy to be corrected if any errors . Idea is to reach it in simple language without making the reader skip the article.
