Showcasing the versatility of CM that it can handle any musical genre jAvaLi is derived from kannaDa which means a SRngAra poem
Melodious words that fit snug in the musical melody give room for ‘sringara abhinaya’ (erotic expression) and linger long in the recall of the listener. Thats definition of a javali by VAK Ranga Rao the musicologist.

by the inimitable Semmangudi in his unique nasal voice well when he was 70+ !
Semmangudi + 70+ = a javali well appreciated by the cognoscenti is what i am infering here. .Lets get the meaning of atleast a part of it

The author Dharmapuri Subbarayar was besotted literally by Veena Dhanammal and her talent that as a bank clerk he broke into languid telugu poetry and created many javalis and dedicated one on Veena Dhanam herself.

When Veena Dhanam had to sell her house to pay her debtors Dharmapuri Subbarayar who wasnt around couldnt help in the hour of need. He came noticed the status of Veena Dhanam and gifted her the inimitable Javali Sakiprana in Senchurutti (ably sung by SSI) and true to being a great artist Veena Dhanam accepted it graciously
Now we face head on the genesis of this form which was considered lewd for the highbrow. Form should have evolved much before the term what with pieces by Annamayya. And enters our Thiagaraja Swamy (a sample from the many) with his ‘Sogasu chooda tarama’ (Kannadagowla, Rupakam). What beauty is yours! Your shiny temples, red fruit-like lips (bimbasama adharamu) the words forming a part in many javalis and the songs coming into the category of anurakhti (infatuation) not Bhakthi.
Its a form handled by the great CM vaggeyakaras showcasing the depth of our music. CM will neither conform as a preserve of the high brow/ultra pious nor will it listen to their strict rules of purity !
