4 Allied Ragas Shri / Madhyamavathi / Manirangu / Salagabhairavi
Caveat : To whose who know to identify am awe struck with your capacity . This primer is for whose who wish to !
All the four above are janyas of Kharaharapriya and to touch briefly the Aro and Ava.
Shri
Sa ri ma pa ni sa and Sa ni pa dha ni pa ma ri ga ri sa
An audava - Sampoorna raga with 5 notes in the Aro and seven in the ava and descent being eccentric makes it a Vakra Raga. The Raga provides a grandeur like nothing we have heard.
My tamil friends would recollect with glee that a song like Muthukkalo Kanngal (Nenjirukkumvarai by TMS) is based on raga Shree. Now the range truly seems amazing...Muthukkalo Kanngal , Thithipadho Kannam upto MDs Shri Kamalambikay .....
Madhyamavathi
Sa Ri Ma Pa Ni Sa and Sa ni Pa Ma ri Sa
A close cousin or niece of Shri Raga with variations being Gandhara and Dhaivata being omitted in the Ava unlike in Shri Raga and an audava audava raga meaning five swaras up and down.
Ommission of Da and Ga in Madhyamavathi makes for clear distinction and phrases like pa dha ni pa ma ri ga ri sa used repeatedly in Shri emphasising the dhaivata and Ghandara.
Now my hero Kishore has sung Hum Dono Do premee in Ajnabee (hindi) and i urge you to listen to it for the clear Baritone voice of KK.
Manirangu
Sa Ri Ma Pa Ni Sa and Sa Ni Pa Ma Ga Ri Sa
Our cousin or niece also shares the same Arohana of the earlier 2 ragas but in the Ava it takes on the gandhara (which you know is absent in Madhyamavathi) It is an audava Shadava raga meaning five up and 6 down. Actually with Dha being absent it is fairly close to Shri raga and it requires a good singer to elucidate it well.
There is a nice Manirangu based film song which goes Suga Raagame in the film Kanni Rasi.
Add any famous compositions in Manirangu and win a chance to write the next article in this forum
Salagabhairavi
Sa Ri Ma Pa Dha Sa and Sa ni dha pa ma ga ri sa
This beautiful raga is a whiff of the other 3 ragas but significant difference of having the Dha instead of the NI in the arohana. In the Ava is has all the seven swaras in the straight order without any vakratva
Well you have another danger here as in the Dha in the Ascent is a close resemblance of Mukhari so skilfull handling and listening is essential. Remember Salagabhairavi is plaintiveness personified and Mukhari is Dolefulness personified. (What did i write !! This is the low down of a cut n paste job !!
)
Hope you liked the piece and i have no intention of closing it without a Thokku as they call in tamil land. (which means this is not the end. The end is when it really ends)
Pushpalatika or Pushpalata
The above is an allied raga being a Jhanya of Kharaharapriya. More soon
