1 1 2020 Sanjay NY cuch !
1 of 2 or how much ever I can stretch !
One could sense the return of the years lost due to distance. How both of them were inseparable during school and college days and fate had to intervene and separate them to their journeys but never their desire for each other. Both of them met at Sanjays concert and they couldn’t but remain silent at the suddenness of seeing the respective hearts desire at that moment…it so seemed to them that the happy rasikas where happy just so, they saw each other after a large gap ! Oh the rush of time and the deep imprints it leaves in ones heart !
Knock knock :
A fairy knocks on my shoulder saying I got my keyboard and audience wrong and I am going to write the Review for Sanjay cuch and not some clarified Mills n Boon ! (clarified = once heated)
Excuse my error and read whats right !
Have changed by keyboard and addressing to my usual reader community in CMF !
As my erudite readers know I did give a big build up for the songs to be featured and I am happy that one and one song did figure out in the marathon session of Sanjays Devagaanam on 1 1 2020. Inbox me your guess and you get the opportunity to host me for sanjays next cutchery !
It was a muggy day at Chennai with the clouds opening rains like it was no ones business. Sanjay himself who came in disguise was looking for a ticket but seeing the crowd decided he might as well come as Sanjay and sing. Such was the crowd in the premises. It must be said the hall is smaller but in no way less comforting.
I had the fortune of having Subramanian Seshadri sir and a good family friend as co rasikas and as the AC settled well and we all posited positively . To say every inch was filled is an understatement …none were sitting on Sanjays head..since he had to sing. !
Boomed out the the vigourous voice a lovely Varnam Nee Indha Maaayam…in Dhanyasi..and a radiance hit me . That was the full smile of Mr Subbu who adores this raga and he even said..good boy this Sanjay. While the raga instantly could shine the varnam is new to me. ¼ of a chance yours truly will write pages of whatever fancies him. And then…. we have a regal raga like Dhanyasi and I must write a bit.
Subbarama Dikshitar (illustrious indeed) states unequivocally that raga Dhanyasi existed atleast 120 years prior to Venkatamakhi and prior to the concept of melakarta classification. Let me elucidate a few light notes to make this interesting
Tyagaraja’s mother, Seethamma, is said to have rendered several Devaranamas at home, which left a profound and permanent impact on her son. Many compositions of Tyagaraja are modelled after Purandaradasa’s Devaranamas. In a Devaranama, Purandaradasa sang "Sakala theertha yatrava madidanta nikhala punyada phalavu, bhakti poorvakavagi bidadanu dindalli prakata Purandara Vitthalada naamada smarane onde saalade".
This theme is echoed verbatim, in the composition "Dhyaaname varamaina Ganga snaaname" by Tyagaraja, in raga Dhanyasi.
Lets suspend the story of Dikshatars wife asking for Jewel but recollect the dazzling piece "Mangaladevataya" in raga Dhanyasi. Oh the one and only Dikshatar with his deep insight into Raga contours.
The composition "Meena Lochana" by Syama Sastri in Dhanyasi, belongs to the Navaratnamalika series dedicated to Devi Meenakshi and It is a masterpiece. I request our admin Sheela Raman to conduct a program on this 9ratna malika of Syama Sastry.
Not to say Sanjays Dhanyasi varnam was any less but he started with a Raga of such antiquity and it gave an opening of things to come.
A brisk Swaminatha Paripalayam in Naatai by Dikshatar brought the Lord before our eyes as also the unique way GNB made it popular. In fact there is a GNB version I suppose
The pretty Princess Sahana made her debut entry in the hall sans any frills..in the beautiful composition of Thiagaraya Swami.. Ee Vasudha…. Subbu sir would have liked little raga alapana…but what he shortened in the beginning more than compensated as the song progressed. . There is no match to the way Sahana was decked lyrically, musically, and through the voice of Sanjay on that day. It helped I knew the krithi so could enjoy the praise on Lord Shiva !
The way Sanjay intones Sundaresa soaks and seeps it in all the Sahanas that have been sung in that hall...
to be continued asap
